Anyone shave with a straight razor?

Post by nrv216 » 05 Mar 2012, 21:39

Ok so I am always interested to see if there is a correlation between liking 57s and liking other stuff so...

Any of you guys shave with a straight razor? I have been interested in learning for some time now and finally picked up a Dovo 5/8 straight razor and shave kit today. Pretty excited to try it and hopefully not :suicide: in the process!

Yep, have for 3-4 years now. Much better quality shave than a regular razor. Takes some time getting used to... I would suggest doing everything but your chin when your starting out, just work your way up to it cause it takes a bit more practice. Also, careful around your lips. HIGHLY recommended getting a stiptic stick for when you nick yourself... because you will.

I think it took me a good 3 months before I felt fully comfortable with it. Holding a raazor to my throat wasn't the problem, just getting comfortable with holding it and such... as they are quite large compared to a regular razor. I'm down to about 10-15 min to shave now, I think the first time was like 45-60min. Haha.

You'll probably want to get a wet stone for sharpening, I usually take it to the stone every 3-6mo. You'll definitely know when it is time to sharpen it up.

Good luck! If you need any tips, just let me know!

I do as well, I LOVE it, SOOO much better than any other shaving method IMO.

For some reason it really didn't take me much time at all to get used to it, after the second it third shave I felt totally comfortable with it

Same here. I wonder if anyone else who uses the FsN also likes looking at beautiful nude women? Nah, no correlation, never mind... I'm sure it's just me...

Oh and more on topic... I have always wanted to try a straight razor but have been afraid of decapitation. Your success stories have inspired me though and I just may try this in the coming weeks.

Don't expect a video review though, I don't want to have to edit out the blood & gore.

Lol I tried this once myself. I got it as a gift from a buddy of mine. The next time I saw him he was rolling with laughter as I walked up to him. He knew I had tried it by all the cuts on my face.

Fuzzy and sniperjoe,

I will probably have questions for you in the near future. Thanks!

Greenberg,

Come on man I was expecting a "fastest straight shave and then shoot a gummy bear" video!

I have recently gotten into straight razor shaving because the wife gave me a gift certificate to have a straight shave done at a place in the mall near our house.

Long story short, I really enjoyed it.

If any of you have these guys near by, I'd definitely suggest making an appointment

Bax,
That is where I got my stuff. There is an Art of Shaving near my place of business and I am friends with the owner so I got a substantial discount.

I shaved for the first time today and there was very little blood! I have to say I was quite pleased especially for my first time. The areas where I did a good job are still baby butt smooth and I shaved 12 hours ago! That's pretty good for me. Also, after I shaved with the straight razor I tried to touch up some areas with my shick quatro. Even the areas where I didn't get a close shave were too short for the quatro to touch. Needless to say, I am impressed and I look forward to improving my skills.

Fuzzy, I even did my chin and only nicked myself once :D ! Thanks for the advice! I was especially careful in the areas you mentioned.

Glad to hear someone else had a good experience with them. They are pricey, but well worth it.

I am prone to pretty bad razor burn on my throat and since I have been using the pre-shave oil prior to lathering up, the razor burn has dramatically decreased! And the sandalwood smells pretty dang good too

I would get some razor burn with regular razors, and now that I've switched it is gone.

I got some razor burn and irritation with the straight razor the second time I tried it but I am sure that was due to technique. I think the first time was beginner's luck! I expect it will take a while before I am truly comfortable using a straight razor for my everyday shave.
